The United States is a strong supporter of Israel in the Gaza war. Washington is helping Tel Aviv not only financially, but also verbally. President Joe Biden has been seen as a staunch supporter of Israel. But Kamala Harris, the vice president of the United States and the possible presidential candidate of the Democratic Party, was seen “against the tide” on the Gaza issue. He wants an end to the Gaza war. He told reporters after meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday. Al Jazeera, AFP.
Kamala Harris said, “What has happened in Gaza in 9 months is terrible. Images of dead children and starving people desperately fleeing for safe shelter, some of whom have been displaced for a second, third or fourth time, appear. In such a situation, we cannot look away from these heartbreaking events. We cannot remain silent after witnessing such suffering and I will not remain silent.’
Kamala also called on Netanyahu to agree to a proposed US-backed cease-fire deal in Gaza. However, he reiterated his support for Israel’s right to self-defense. The potential presidential candidate referred to the Palestinian independence armed organization Hamas as a “brutal terrorist organization”. Kamala said, the time has come to end this war. And it must end in such a way that Israel is safe, all hostages are released, the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people can exercise their right to freedom, dignity and self-determination. On the other hand, American doctors are claiming that children are being deliberately shot in Gaza. They have written to Biden and Kamala about this. A group of 45 US doctors and nurses who have had their own work experience there highlighted the issue.
It is written in that letter that probably the number of dead in this conflict has already exceeded 92 thousand. This number is shocking. Because, it is about 4.2 percent of the total population of Gaza. Each of the medical workers who signed the letter said the Palestinian children they treated had been “deliberately” targeted. Each of us treats children who have been shot in the head and chest every day, they wrote. Almost everyone in Gaza, with the exception of a few, is sick, injured, or struggling with both. They also wrote, “We cannot forget the scenes of intolerable cruelty to women and children, which we ourselves witnessed.”
Meanwhile, 11 people have been released from Israeli prisons. Among them is a 17-year-old teenager. He told Al Jazeera that the Israeli army subjected him to inhumane torture for providing information about Hamas and its hostages.
