India and Pakistan exchanged information on nuclear installations on Wednesday on the first day of the new year. This information was exchanged under a 1988 agreement, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said.
This was reported by the Indian Express on Thursday (January 2).
According to the more than three-decade-old agreement, the two countries will not attack each other’s nuclear installations.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that India and Pakistan exchanged a list of their nuclear installations on Wednesday under a bilateral agreement. Which prohibits both sides from attacking each other’s nuclear installations.
This exchange of nuclear information between New Delhi and Islamabad under the agreement was done through diplomatic channels.
It further said that India and Pakistan today (Wednesday) exchanged lists of nuclear installations and installations under the agreement prohibiting attacks against nuclear installations and installations through diplomatic channels, simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad.
The list exchanged typically includes nuclear power plants, uranium enrichment plants, and reprocessing facilities—anything related to nuclear weapons or energy production.
The exchange is intended to create transparency and reduce the risk of conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have been simmering over Kashmir and cross-border terrorism for years. However, the India-Pakistan agreement has not been tampered with. The two countries also exchange lists of prisoners in each other’s custody.
