Indonesia’s president-elect, Prabowo Subianto, has embarked on a diplomatic journey that underscores his commitment to fostering ties across Asia. Following his recent visit to China, where he expressed a desire for closer relations, Prabowo met with Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, in Tokyo, signaling a nuanced approach to foreign policy.

In discussions with Kishida, Prabowo emphasized the importance of enhancing security and economic cooperation between Indonesia and Japan. This meeting comes amid growing competition between regional powers for influence in Southeast Asia, particularly in the contested waters of the South China Sea.

Prabowo’s outreach to both China and Japan reflects Indonesia’s stance of non-alignment, positioning itself as a key player in the region without aligning with any single power bloc. This strategic maneuvering is crucial as countries like Japan and China seek to court Southeast Asian nations for geopolitical advantage.
