Qatar and the two countries concerned have rejected US President Trump’s proposal to transfer Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan. Qatar has also called on Israel and Hamas to immediately start the second phase of talks to make the Gaza ceasefire permanent.
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani made the call on Sunday.
At a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in the capital Doha, he said, “All parties must remain committed to the terms of the Gaza ceasefire and quickly enter the second phase of negotiations.”
He also stressed that “there is no room for compromise for the second phase of negotiations.”
Latest situation in negotiations
The first six-week ceasefire agreement in Gaza brokered by Qatar and Egypt has come into effect and is now awaiting the next phase of negotiations. The Qatari prime minister said that although the second phase of negotiations is scheduled to begin on Monday, there is still no clear information.
He said, “We hope to see some progress in the next few days.”
Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently visiting the United States. For this reason, he has postponed sending an Israeli negotiating team to Qatar. He is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday.
Palestinian relocation issue
On the other hand, US President Trump’s administration recently proposed the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan.
The Qatari Prime Minister strongly opposed the proposal, saying, “We reject any forced displacement.”
Along with Qatar, Egypt and Jordan have also rejected Trump’s proposal, according to media reports.
