Record rainfall in southwest China, 6 dead

At least six people have died in southwest China after record rainfall. Xinhua news agency reported this information in a report on Thursday (July 11).

The report cited local officials as saying that heavy rain fell in Dianjiang County, near the megacity of Chongqing, from Wednesday night to Thursday morning local time. One person died after a house collapsed and at least three others were trapped in the landslide.

Apart from this, around seven thousand people have been affected by the storm and 170 people have been asked to evacuate.

On the other hand, state broadcaster CCTV quoted the county flood control office as saying that four people had died and two others had ‘drowned’ in the ‘geological disaster’ as of 1:50pm local time on Thursday.

Xinhua also reported that some parts of Dianjiang measured up to 254.6 millimeters of rain, the highest in a single day since records began.
