Tensions flared once again near the Thai-Myanmar border as clashes erupted between the Myanmar junta and armed ethnic groups in proximity to a key trade hub, both an armed group spokesperson and the Thai army confirmed on Saturday. This resurgence of violence comes after a period of relative calm, signaling the persistent volatility in Myanmar since the military seized power from a democratically elected government in a coup in 2021.
The latest clashes occurred near the strategic trade hub of Myawaddy, which had witnessed intense fighting earlier this month, compelling the military to retreat from its positions in the town. While the area had experienced a lull in hostilities over the past week, concerns lingered as a regional bloc expressed “deep concern” about the ongoing situation.
According to reports, armed confrontations between the anti-junta Karen National Union (KNU) and Myanmar’s military junta reignited in Myawaddy. However, specific details regarding the clashes were not immediately available.
Early on Saturday, a Thai army unit stationed along the border confirmed the resumption of hostilities, with clashes targeting junta soldiers positioned under the 2nd Friendship Bridge—a critical trade route for Myanmar’s cash-strapped military. The Thai army’s Rajamnu Special Task Force reported ongoing fighting and deployed drones in the area, highlighting the intensity of the conflict.
The closure of the bridge, coupled with the escalation of violence, underscores the strategic significance of Myawaddy to both the junta and regional trade dynamics. With billions of dollars’ worth of trade passing through the hub annually, the recent unrest threatens to disrupt economic activities and exacerbate tensions in the region.
As the situation unfolds, Thai authorities remain vigilant, closely monitoring developments along the border. The resumption of hostilities near Myawaddy underscores the enduring challenges facing Myanmar and the precarious security environment prevailing in the region, casting a shadow over efforts to restore stability and peace.
