Vietnam’s parliament has elected public security minister To Lam as the new president. Lawmakers unanimously voted in favor of a proposal to elect To Lam as president on Wednesday, following the normal process of a one-party state.

After being elected president, Lam said in parliament that he will continue to fight corruption firmly and steadfastly.

As Minister of Public Security, Lam (66) has led the country’s anti-corruption campaign from the front. Known as the ‘Fiery Furnace’, the campaign was aimed at rooting out widespread corruption. But critics have also seen the campaign as a way to sideline political rivals. Reuters reported this news.

The country’s ruling Communist Party nominated To Lam as its presidential candidate last week. A resolution was then passed approving Lam’s nomination by secret ballot. From then on, Lam was the only candidate for the post of head of state.

The president of Vietnam has a largely ceremonial role to play. Despite that, this position is one of the top four political positions (so-called ‘four pillars’) in the country. The other three are the head of the Communist Party, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament.

The position of head of the ruling Communist Party is the country’s highest office. Analysts believe that Lam can later become a candidate for the post of party chief.

The current head of the Communist Party of Vietnam, veteran Nguyen Phu Trong, will be serving his third five-year term in 2026. However, Trong may leave the post due to age before the end of the term. In that case, analysts believe that Lam’s presidential election can act as a ‘foundation stone’ in becoming a party chief candidate.

Another vote in parliament is expected to take place on Wednesday to remove Lam as public security minister. It is not clear who is coming to this important position in the cabinet.
