The United States is working closely with the interim government of Bangladesh on various issues, including the security of minorities, White House security and communications adviser John Kirby said.
He said this in response to a question at a regular briefing at the White House on Thursday (December 12).
In response to a question from an Indian journalist, White House security and communications adviser John Kirby said, “His country is closely monitoring every incident in Bangladesh. The president is also following the events closely.”
He said, “The security situation in Bangladesh has become complicated after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government and we are working closely with the interim government to increase the capacity of their law enforcement and security services.”
Kirby also said, “We have made it clear in our discussions with all Bangladeshi leaders that ensuring the protection of religious and ethnic minorities is very important. The leaders of the interim government have repeatedly promised that they will ensure the security of all Bangladeshis, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Meanwhile, the US State Department has released a report on the security situation in Bangladesh in 2023.
The report on terrorism said that although no terrorist attacks occurred in Bangladesh in 2023, there were incidents of repression, detention, and extrajudicial killings of opposition leaders on such charges. Human rights violations were also alleged against law enforcement agencies.
The US report revealed information about terrorist attacks by the terrorist group Kuki Chin National Front or KNF in the hilly region.
The issue of controlling freedom of expression and arrests of citizens through the Cyber Security Act by amending the Digital Security Act was also mentioned. The report mentioned that as an area of international cooperation, Bangladesh and the United States have provided assistance in improving airport security in addition to security cooperation.
