What South Korea said after summoning the Russian ambassador

South Korea has summoned the Russian ambassador over the sending of North Korean troops to help in the war in Russia. Seoul has also called for the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops.

According to South Korean intelligence, about 1,500 North Korean special forces soldiers are already stationed in Russia and they will soon be sent to the front lines of the war in Ukraine.

This is the first time in North Korea’s history that troops have been sent abroad. It is expected that more Korean troops will arrive in Russia soon.

A military agreement was signed between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in June 2024.

In this regard, South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun told the Russian ambassador that this move poses a serious threat not only to South Korea’s security, but also to the international community.

He noted that North Korea’s supply of troops and weapons to Russia violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions and the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, South Korean intelligence agencies have claimed that North Korean special forces soldiers were transported to Russia’s Far East region by Russian naval ships between October 8 and 13. These soldiers are undergoing training there and are expected to be deployed to the front lines in Ukraine soon.

Pyongyang and Moscow have long-standing friendly relations. This relationship has deepened, especially after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the Putin administration, saying that Russia is currently relying on North Korea’s assistance due to its huge losses on the battlefield.

Based on intelligence reports, he claimed that North Korea has already sent 10,000 soldiers to Russia to fight against Kiev.

Meanwhile, South Korea has also claimed that North Korea has delivered about 13,000 container-loads of weapons, ammunition and missiles to Russia since last August. Source: NDTV
