Flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the northern Chinese province of Hunan have killed 30 people. Besides, at least 35 people are still missing.
The country’s state-run news agency Xinhua reported this information in a report on Friday (August 2).
A record 645 millimeters of rain fell in the 24-hour period from Wednesday night to Thursday night in Hunan’s Zhejiang district, officials from the Central Meteorological Bureau said. Rescue operations have started in various affected areas of the district. So far, more than 11,000 people have been evacuated to safe places, Xinhua said in its report.
Hunan province is mountainous and landlocked. This year, this region of China has experienced more weather disasters than in previous years. Officials of the Meteorological Department said that the heat wave that swept over Hunan during the month of July broke the record of the last 6 decades.
Then it started raining on Wednesday. As it is a mountainous region, hardka buns have appeared in various regions of Zhejiang. Most of the missing were swept away in those boats.
According to media CCTV reports, 30 people have been killed in Zhejiang in the last 24 hours of natural disasters. Besides, 15 more people were killed in other areas of the province.
In a message, Chinese Premier Li Qiang assured the provincial government of Hunan to provide all assistance to deal with the crisis.
