6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines
A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines in Southeast Asia. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that the earthquake hit the island of Mindanao in the Philippines on Thursday. The agency said the quake’s depth was 630 kilometers (391.46 miles) from the surface.
The Philippine Seismology Agency said in a statement that no damage was expected from the earthquake. But there may be an aftershock.
Earlier in January this year, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck about 100 kilometers (62.1 miles) southeast of the southern province of Sarangani in the Philippines.
Before this, in the beginning of December last year, the Philippines was shaken by a strong earthquake for three consecutive days. The magnitude of those three tremors were 6.8, 6.4 and 7.6 respectively on the Richter scale.
Note that there are frequent earthquakes in the Philippines. The country is geologically located in the seismically active region ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, which stretches from Japan across Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean. The US Geological Survey has identified the Pacific Ring of Fire as the world’s most seismically and volcanically active region.
