The house was destroyed by the Israeli attack. Father and son were injured. Looking at his son’s face, the father can’t stop crying. Such a picture was seen in Rafah in Palestine yesterday.

An Israeli attack on the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip is imminent. The United Nations has warned that Israel’s limited access to humanitarian aid cannot be seen as a justification for the attack on Rafah.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called on the countries that have influence on them to prevent the Israeli attack on Rafah.

The UN Secretary-General made the call after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to launch a military operation in Rafah on Tuesday.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the Israeli military will conduct a ground operation in Rafah “regardless of the ceasefire agreement” with Hamas.

Martin Griffiths, head of UN human rights affairs, said last Tuesday that several countries around the world have been calling for not to attack Rafah for several weeks. But Israel’s ground operation there is imminent.

He warned that an unprecedented humanitarian disaster will occur if the Israeli army conducts a ground operation in Rafah. About 1.5 million Palestinians currently take refuge in Rafah.

Griffiths added that the ground operation would cause more casualties for the millions of people who have fled to Gaza’s southernmost point to escape disease, famine, mass graves and front-line fighting.

According to the Health Ministry of Hamas-controlled Gaza, at least 34,568 civilians, most of whom are women and children, have been killed in the Israeli attack on Gaza.

Israel pledged a month ago to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza. UN Secretary-General Guterres said little progress had been made in averting a man-made famine in Gaza. There is an urgent need to take further steps.

Griffiths said the little progress made in getting humanitarian aid to Gaza could not be used as preparation for an attack on Rafah or as justification for an all-out military operation.

Guterres urged Israel to keep its promise to open two crossings on the northern border.

Earlier in March, a UN report claimed that famine would occur in Gaza by May. By July, famine could be widespread throughout Palestine. Guterres said the most vulnerable people in northern Gaza were already dying of hunger and disease.

In response to the question whether Israel’s ally the United States can play a role in this, Guterres said that it is very important to exert all possible pressure to avoid a catastrophic situation.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he would discuss with Netanyahu on boosting humanitarian aid to Gaza.
