China and Russia have started joint naval exercises at a military port in southern China. Russia and China have begun joint military exercises amid tensions with the US-led NATO military alliance. This information was reported by the US news agency Associated Press with reference to China’s official news agency Xinhua News.

China and Russia began joint military exercises just days after Western military alliance NATO threatened harsh consequences if China did not change its policy of supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine, the report said.

China’s Ministry of Defense said in a brief statement that the joint maritime exercise 2024 began on Sunday (July 14) near the city of Zhangjiang in Guangdong Province.

According to the ministry’s statement, Chinese and Russian troops have recently conducted patrols in the Western and North Pacific Oceans and the international exercise has nothing to do with the regional situation. No third parties are targeted.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said the exercise, which began in Guangdong province on Sunday, could continue until mid-July. The exercise aims to demonstrate the Navy’s capability to counter security threats and maintain global and regional peace and stability. The joint exercise will include anti-missile drills, maritime strikes and air defense.

A statement approved by the 32 members was released at the NATO summit in Washington last week. It has identified Beijing as Russia’s biggest backer of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

If Beijing does not change its policy on supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine, China will suffer the consequences, NATO’s statement said. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg also commented that Beijing is trying to satisfy both sides by supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine and trying to maintain relations with its European allies.

NATO says China is supplying Russia with many technologies, such as microelectronics, which are key to Russia’s missile development. Russia is using Chinese-made weapons against Ukraine. However, Beijing has termed NATO’s accusations as an attempt to escalate tensions in the Asian region.

China’s foreign ministry says Beijing is not selling lethal weapons to Russia. China has a fair and objective position on the war in Ukraine.
