More than 60 MPs from the country have written to US Foreign Secretary David Lammy demanding sanctions on Israel. They have called for a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements and a review of existing trade relations with the country.
Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported this information in a report on Friday (November 29).
The letter was sent on Wednesday (November 27) night by British MPs Richard Burgoyne and Imran Hussein. It was signed by former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer, as well as several MPs from Labour, Liberal Democrat, Plaid Cymru, and the Scottish National Party.
The letter states that in July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an opinion stating that, ‘Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal and should be ended as soon as possible. All countries in the world should not recognize Israel’s illegal occupation as legitimate and should not provide them with any assistance.’
In the letter, the MPs made some demands to the British government. The demands are that trade with illegal settlements should be banned, existing and ongoing trade relations with Israel should be reviewed and arms exports to Israel should be suspended.
The letter also mentioned, ‘In line with the ICJ’s opinion, the UK should come forward to uphold international law.’
Some MPs in the British Parliament have also reacted to this issue. MP Richard Burgon said, ‘We cannot allow Israel to violate international law. Our government must send a clear message through sanctions that everyone will suffer the consequences of war crimes and violations of the law.’
Another MP Imran Hussain said, ‘These sanctions are necessary to stop Israel’s war crimes and illegal occupation. Our government must take steps to uphold international law.’
