Gun attack on Ashura celebration in Oman, 9 killed

A gun attack took place near a Shia mosque in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Four Pakistani nationals and a policeman were killed in the incident, including the three attackers. At least 28 people were injured. But gun attacks are rare in the predominantly Muslim Gulf nation of Oman.

In a statement, Omani police said the shooting occurred near a mosque in Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area. The police responded to the attack.

The attack took place when Shia Muslims were observing Ashura.

Xe Post Police said that all necessary security measures have been taken to deal with the situation. Authorities have started an investigation into the incident. At the same time, the process of collecting evidence is going on.

Police did not provide any further details, but local media reports said a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle.
