A highly talented Chinese student has been teaching college-level math online for just 12 years. The girl named Gu, a primary school student, was seen standing in front of a white board with a marker pen in hand. His videos clearly explain mathematics, from geometry to functions—and even calculus. He has 2.9 million followers on social media.
Primarily first year college students do these numbers. In December 2023, the Chinese student won accolades by successfully solving a complex university-level math problem.
A college student commented below his video — Thanks, Teacher Gu, for helping me get the extra five points.
His keen interest in the subject led to Gur’s exceptional mathematical skills at an early age. He continues to post videos of his approach to math while exploring different learning methods.
Initially, I encouraged her to record videos explaining problems to facilitate her own understanding of mathematics, Gur Ma said.
This method of learning is known as the Feynman Technique, which was invented by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. According to his theory, if people learn to learn, they are able to acquire knowledge more efficiently.
Gur’s first video in 2022 featured middle school math problems. Now an increasing number of people seek advice from him and he records the problem-solving process in daily videos, which are three to five minutes long. One of his followers said, “Some issues in high school used to confuse me, but after watching Guru’s video, everything became clear.
Another person joked about relying on a 12-year-old girl despite being in college.
Elementary school student Gu is considering entering the Olympiad, a global math competition for pre-university students.
His success has sparked online discussions about gifted children. As one person said about Gur, such talent comes once in a century.
