Myanmar’s three main ethnic armed groups have been declared terrorists by the ruling military junta. Since last year, the members of these groups have defeated the army and occupied various areas in the northern and western parts of the country.
The government has declared the Arakan Army (AA), the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) as “terrorist organizations,” according to the junta-run media Global New Light of Myanmar.
According to the country’s anti-terrorism laws, it is illegal to be a member of, or to be in contact with, members of these designated terrorist groups.
The media quoted the army’s State Administration Council (SAC) chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, as saying that those who interact with these ‘terrorists’ are also committing ‘terrorist activities’.
The military seized power in Myanmar in February 2021. To oust them, the three rebel groups Arakan Army, MNDAA and TNLA formed the ‘Three Brotherhood Alliance’ late last year. After that, they started attacking the military installations simultaneously.
