China has urged the Philippines to maintain “peace” in the disputed South China Sea.

China’s Foreign Ministry warned the country on Thursday (December 26) that Manila’s decision to deploy a US medium-range missile system for military exercises would only increase the risk of an arms race in the region.

The US Typhoon medium-range missile system, which can be equipped with cruise missiles capable of hitting Chinese targets, was brought to the Philippines for joint exercises earlier this year.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro said on Tuesday that the deployment of the Typhoon for joint exercises was “legal and illegal.”

Earlier, the country’s army chief, Roy Gallido, said on Monday that the Philippines also plans to acquire its own medium-range missile system.

Hostilities between China and the Philippines have increased in recent years over competing claims in the South China Sea. Long-standing allies Manila and Washington have deepened military ties, further heightening tensions in the region.

“By using the typhoon to cooperate with the United States, the Philippines has surrendered its own security and national defense to others, and has increased the risk of geopolitical conflict and the risk of an arms race in the region. This poses a significant threat to regional peace and security,” said Mao Ning, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

“We once again advise the Philippines that the only correct choice for safeguarding its national security is to adhere to strategic autonomy, good relations with its neighbors and peaceful development,” Mao told reporters at a regular news conference.

The foreign minister also warned that China would never remain silent when its security interests are threatened.
