The United Nations has said that $53 billion is needed to rebuild the besieged Gaza Strip and end the “humanitarian catastrophe” in the war-torn region.

Al Jazeera reported this in a report on Wednesday (February 12).

The Qatar-based media outlet also reported that $20 billion of this money will be needed in the first three years, citing the United Nations.

In this regard, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “Although it is not possible to fully assess the needs in Gaza in the current environment, the interim assessment gives an initial indication of the need for massive recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.”

The Israeli army has been attacking the besieged Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023. More than 48,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 12,000 are missing in this 15-month-long attack. In addition, more than 100,000 people have been injured during this period.

The ceasefire in Gaza has been in effect since January 19. However, that ceasefire agreement is now in doubt.

According to the United Nations, Israel’s brutal offensive has displaced about 85 percent of Gaza’s Palestinian population. In addition, 60 percent of the infrastructure in the besieged territory has been damaged or destroyed.
