US President Joe Biden called India and Japan xenophobic. Japan was shocked by his comments. The US leader’s comments have also been protested by the country.
Biden said the U.S. economy is in good shape because it welcomes immigrants. He also claimed that the economy of China, Japan, Russia and India is not like that of the United States.
Basically, Joe Biden called India and Japan xenophobic by putting them on the same seat with China and Russia. Xenophobic means a negative attitude towards foreigners or immigrants.
However, Japan countered that Biden’s comments were unfortunate and wrong.
In a statement, Tokyo said it was unfortunate because the comment was made without proper knowledge of Japan’s policy, AFP reported.
The Japanese government has already conveyed this message to the White House and clarified its policy position.
Immigration policy is a big issue in the wake of the US presidential election. Republican Donald Trump has taken an anti-immigration stance on one side. Democrats there are pro-immigration.
Biden’s critical comments came as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida paid a state visit to Washington a few weeks ago. At that time, Biden called the United States-Japan alliance ‘unbreakable’.
