Netanyahu faces arrest in 124 countries after ICC decision

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes in Gaza.

Although Israel does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction and has said that Netanyahu and Gallant will not surrender, their freedom of movement has been restricted.

There are 124 countries under the Rome Statute, the ICC’s founding treaty. These countries are obliged to execute the court’s arrest warrants.

International human rights lawyer Jonathan Qutab said that laws are made on the assumption that people will obey them. Those who disobey the law are committing crimes themselves.

Qutab added that many of Israel’s allies, especially members of the European Union, are committed to executing the warrants.

Netanyahu called the charges “anti-Semitic.”
