Sanjay Roy, who was convicted of raping and murdering a female doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. A court in Sealdah sentenced him to this sentence on Monday (January 20).
Sanjay Roy, a former citizen volunteer of the Kolkata Police, was brought to the court today amid tight security.
At around 12:30 pm on Monday, Judge Anirban Das of the Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah heard Sanjay Roy’s statement before pronouncing the sentence.
Earlier, on Saturday (January 18), Judge Anirban Das had convicted 33-year-old Sanjay Roy. He had said at the time that his sentence on Monday could range from life imprisonment to death.
Sanjay was convicted of raping and murdering a 31-year-old intern doctor on August 9 last year.
It is learnt that the CBI, which took over the investigation from the Kolkata Police at one stage, had sought the death penalty for Sanjay.
Meanwhile, during the sentencing, the accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, again claimed innocence in the court. At that time, he told the judge that he was tortured and forced to sign the document.
On August 9, the body of the female doctor was found in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. After that, protests erupted all over India demanding better working conditions and safety for women at work. Doctors went on strike several times.
CCTV footage shows Sanjay Roy entering the seminar room at 4:03 am on August 9. He came out of the room after about half an hour. The Kolkata Police also found Sanjay’s Bluetooth headphones at the scene.
Meanwhile, the family of the deceased doctor said that the hospital authorities and the police had initially said that their daughter had committed ‘suicide’. Later, in the face of intense anger, the police filed a case of murder and rape in the incident.
