South Korea has got a new president again. This is the third time in less than a month. However, this time the interim president has been given the responsibility of running the country.
Earlier this month, the country’s newly-elected president, Yoon Suk-yul, was embroiled in controversy by recommending the implementation of martial law in the country. After MPs in the parliament started the process of removing him from office (impeachment), Han Dak-soo was given the responsibility of acting president. However, the situation did not normalize in South Korea. On the contrary, the process of removing Han has also started in the parliament again. In this situation, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok has been nominated as the country’s second acting president. Choi, however, assures that he will make every effort to bring the turbulent situation in the country under control.
61-year-old Choi studied at the undergraduate level from Seoul National University Law School. This veteran economist has been associated with the finance minister for more than 30 years. His role in Yoon’s cabinet was also very important. Choi currently holds the three most important positions in the country – acting president, prime minister and finance minister.
Before taking up his new duties today, Choi has initially promised to stabilize the country’s turbulent political situation. He is already leading the ‘F4’, i.e. several financial affairs departments. In this situation, Choi is trying to ensure that foreign investors do not turn away. Although there has been no official action yet, Choi is optimistic that the turbulent situation will be brought under control in the coming days.
