A former Chinese Navy officer has been arrested for illegally entering Taiwan.

The man entered Taipei port last Sunday (June 9). Taiwan will now conduct a military investigation against him.

It is known that the former officer of the Chinese Navy entered the Taiwan Strait after traveling 160 kilometers in a speedboat and was arrested by the country’s coast guard.

The Navy official says he entered Taiwan by mistake. But authorities say he is mainly monitoring Taiwan’s response.

The 60-year-old man, a member of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy, is now being questioned and the incident is under investigation.

Kuan Bi Ling, head of the Taiwan Ocean Affairs Council (OAC), the agency that manages the coast guard, said the man looked refined. He previously served as a captain in the Chinese Navy.

Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Ko said the incident could be a Chinese strategy.

In 1949, when the civil war broke out in China, Taiwan declared itself an independent state. But Beijing insists on claiming the island as its own.
