37-year-old Petangtarn Shinawatra was appointed as the youngest Prime Minister of Thailand last Friday through a vote in the Parliament. Two days after that, on Sunday, the Thai King approved him as the Prime Minister of Thailand. As a result, he will walk the path of cabinet formation next week.
Earlier, Mitra Sretha Thavisin was dismissed as prime minister by the Constitutional Court, the centerpiece of Thailand’s ongoing political unrest for the past two decades. Later in the vote held in Parliament, 319 votes were cast in favor of Petangtarn. And 145 votes against. As a result, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was elected as the Prime Minister of Thailand.
Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s approval as prime minister was read out by House of Representatives Secretary Apat Sukhananda at a ceremony in Bangkok on Sunday. Petangtarn later thanked the king for supporting him as prime minister.
At that time, he said, “As the head of the executive branch, I will carry out my duties with an open heart with the legislators.” I will listen to everyone’s opinion. So that together we can move the country forward with stability.
After receiving royal approval, Petang Tarn embraced his father Thaksin and other family members. Earlier in his first press conference, Petang Tarn announced the continuation of all the policies of his predecessor Sretha, including economic reforms, combating illegal drugs, improving the country’s universal health care system and promoting gender diversity. He also said that he has no plans to appoint his father, former Prime Minister Thaksin, to any government post. But he will take his advice.
