Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs of up to 60 percent on China during the election campaign. After taking office on Monday, he said that a 10 percent tariff could be imposed on all goods imported from China from February 1.
But now the US president has changed his tune and said that he will not impose tariffs on China for the time being. This information was reported by the AFP news agency on Friday.
In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump said that we have a lot of power over China. That is tariffs (the threat of imposition). They don’t want us to impose tariffs. I don’t want it either for the time being. But we have this power, which is a huge pressure on China.
Meanwhile, Beijing has called for resolving differences with Washington through “dialogue and consultation.”
On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said that economic and trade cooperation between China and the United States is beneficial to both countries.
He said that no one will win in a trade and tariff war. It will not be good for anyone’s interests. Not even for global interests.
