Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey will not back down from its responsibility to protect Palestinians from Israeli occupation. Above all else, Palestinian ties to ancestors, including the country’s architect and first president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

At the same time, he declared Turkey’s commitment to protect Palestinian statehood, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Erdogan highlighted the importance of Turkey’s support for the Palestinians at the graduation ceremony of the Turkish Military Academy on Friday.

Those who say we don’t care about Jerusalem don’t know the history of this nation, Erdogan said. Turkey’s history of four centuries is intertwined with Israel’s forcible occupation of Jerusalem. For hundreds of years, the Ottoman Empire ruled large parts of the Arab world, including Jerusalem.

The Turkish head of state also said, “We cannot turn our backs on Jerusalem.” Who can separate Istanbul and Jerusalem?

In the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, Israel occupied East Jerusalem in Palestine. Then in 1980 they occupied the whole of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was declared their capital by force.

But most of the international community, except the United States, never recognized their occupation. Erdogan has always been vocal against the occupation.
