Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that some Western powers are trying to turn the conflict in Ukraine into an all-out World War III. Nevertheless, the Turkish leader expressed hope that peace would return to the region.
The Turkish president said these things to journalists on his way back home on Friday after the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization or SCO in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.
He said, “It is a sad but true fact that some countries and powers hold views that could pave the way for World War III.”
Criticizing the continued supply of weapons by Western countries to Ukraine, Erdogan said that Western arms producers are supplying these weapons to Ukraine to implement their own agenda. It is certain that arms manufacturers need money. And the control of this arms market is entirely in the hands of the West.
The Turkish president said that Russia is talking about negotiating a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis, as opposed to supplying arms to the West.
Saying that Turkey is closely monitoring the ongoing conflict, Erdogan expressed hope that Russia and Ukraine will be able to sign a peace agreement very soon.
About 2,000 civilians have been killed and more than 2,500 injured in Ukraine since Russia declared war on its neighbor on February 24 last year. The UN estimates that the actual number of casualties in the war is much higher.
The United Nations refugee agency says more than 4.6 million Ukrainians have fled to other countries as a result of the war in Ukraine. In addition, more than 7 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced.
