Several states in Malaysia have been hit by severe flooding. Three people have died in the floods so far. More than 80,000 people have been evacuated.
The government of the country was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today on Friday that this monsoon season could see the worst flooding in a decade.
Floods are common in Malaysia’s eastern coastal peninsula during the monsoon season. They usually occur from October to March. However, heavy rains this week have forced many people to evacuate the area. Many people have been evacuated from the northeastern state of Kelantan, which borders Thailand, in particular.
The country’s National Disaster Management Center website said on Friday morning that three people have died in the floods and 80,589 people have been evacuated to safer places. 467 temporary shelters have been opened in seven states for them. Kelantan and Terengganu are among the worst-hit states.
