Saudi ambassador to Syria after a century

Saudi Arabia appointed ambassador to Syria. Faisal al-Muzfel was appointed as the Saudi ambassador to Syria on Sunday (May 26) after more than a century.

Reuters reported this information in a report on Saudi Arabia’s state news agency SPA.

Riyadh severed diplomatic ties with the government of President Bashar al-Assad in 2012 during the Syrian civil war.

After almost a century, the two sides recently agreed to rekindle ties. Saudi Arabia opened an embassy in Riyadh last year and appointed a new ambassador.

In contrast, Saudi Arabia opened its own embassy in Damascus at the beginning of this year.

Among the initiatives to normalize Arab countries’ relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was the restoration of Riyadh-Damascus relations.

After the start of the civil war in 2011, most Western and Arab countries severed diplomatic ties with Syria.
