Erdogan reiterated his commitment to EU membership

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has reiterated his commitment to European Union (EU) membership. Said, joining the EU is a strategic goal of Turkey.

He said this at a joint press conference with Estonian President Karis on Thursday in Ankara. News from Anadolu Agency.

Turkey’s president said that our strategic goal is to get full membership of the European Union. It is our common interest to give Turkey a common perspective of the European Union.

Incidentally, Türkiye applied for EU membership in 1987. The status of claimant state was obtained in 1999. Membership negotiations have started since 2005. The talks have been stalled since 2007 due to the Cyprus issue and opposition from several EU states.

Global and regional issues also came up in the discussion with the President of Estonia. Erdogan said the massacre in Gaza threatened the regional status as well as global security. 37,000 Palestinians have been killed so far in the Gaza massacre.

Turkey’s president said a permanent solution to the Middle East crisis would be a two-state system.
