In the hands of the rebels ‍an important stronghold of the junta

The Myanmar junta has lost another key base to the rebels. The Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic rebel group, has seized a huge junta base near the Bangladesh border. It is known that the base is the Border Guard headquarters. Arakan Army troops entered Maungdu township after seizing their headquarters in northern Maungdu township of Rakhine state on Friday. Earlier on Thursday, the Arakan Army attacked Ki Kan Pine Camp, 12 km north of Maungdoo. It was resisted by the junta. The junta evacuated its commanders by helicopter before the base fell. A local resident said the junta still held other outposts in the city. Rakhine media say around 50 junta troops have surrendered to the Arakan Army.

According to reports, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army and Rohingya Solidarity Organization are also guarding the police headquarters. However, Irrawaddy could not verify the reports. Residents said some of the Junta soldiers had fled to Bangladesh. Junta forces carried out repeated air and artillery strikes on the towns of Maungdu, Buthidung and Pauktau on Friday and Saturday. A military analyst said the AA was attacking junta bases in Buthidang and Maungdu. He also said, “We have heard that the rebel group is preparing for a major attack on Sittwe and Kyaukphyu.

Since the start of the offensive in November last year, the AA has captured nine Rakhine towns and Paletwa Township in South Chin state.
