Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Israel has failed to keep its promises in the Gaza ceasefire agreement ‘as always’. He also called on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories and compensate for the destruction in Gaza.
He made the remarks at a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on Tuesday (February 11), reported Daily Sabah.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Israel has failed to keep its promises in the Gaza ceasefire agreement ‘as always’. He also called on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories and compensate for the destruction in Gaza.
Doubts have been raised about the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in Gaza that came into effect on January 19. The Palestinian independence movement Hamas said on its Telegram social media account that it had suspended the release of hostages on Saturday (February 15) because Israel had broken the agreement by launching an attack on Gaza.
A Palestinian official on Monday (February 10) warned that the agreement was at risk of breaking, citing three major violations by Israel. These include Israeli shelling of Palestinians in Gaza, which has killed at least 25 people since January 1.
“The second violation is Israel’s continued blockade of humanitarian aid,” he said. Third, (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump have provoked the Palestinians with repeated statements about their intention to completely ethnically cleanse the Gaza Strip. ’
Turkey has strongly criticized Israel’s brutal offensive since the beginning of the Gaza war. The country has also rebuked many Western allies for supporting Israel. In protest of the Gaza war, it suspended trade relations with Israel in May 2024 and formally applied to join South Africa’s initiative to prosecute Israel for genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said at a joint press conference, ‘Turkey has shown leadership on the Gaza issue. No other country has done as much in humanitarian aid as Turkey.’
