Israel has launched an official investigation into allegations of severe torture of a Palestinian prisoner against some reserve soldiers. In protest, the country’s extremists attacked the prison.
On Monday, a team of Israeli military police entered the Sde Temen military base in the Negev desert to arrest the accused soldiers. Meanwhile, hard-right protesters gathered outside and began demonstrating in favor of the troops.
Serious allegations of torture of detainees taken from Gaza at the Sde Temen military base have surfaced for months. Israel has launched an official investigation into the incident.
Some right-wing MPs from the country’s coalition government were among the protesters at the Sde Temen military base on Sunday. They raised slogans in favor of the troops and some tried to push through the main gate of the base.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the protesters to “quickly calm down”. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the investigation against the troops must continue and the law will be enforced.
According to local media reports, at least nine reserve soldiers have been accused of torturing Palestinian prisoners. The prisoner is believed to be a Hamas fighter. He was arrested in Gaza.
The Israeli press reported that the Palestinian prisoner was accused of sexual abuse. His anus was so badly injured that he could not even walk properly and was hospitalized.
