Türkiye has passed a law to take the country’s nearly 4 million stray dogs off the streets and send them to shelters. According to the law approved by the country’s parliament on Tuesday, all stray dogs in the country will be removed from the streets and sent to shelters.
The law requires city authorities to send stray dogs to shelters. If a dog behaves violently or suffers from an incurable disease, it will be killed.
The current shelters for dogs in Turkey have a capacity of 150,000. Therefore, local authorities have been directed to allocate 3.3 percent of the budget for the construction of shelters and animal rehabilitation services. For this, they have been given time till 2028.
The controversial law was proposed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party. This law has been in the face of controversy since its proposal. According to animal lovers, controlling the number of dogs by tracking them can be more effective. For several weeks, animal lovers have been protesting against this law by standing on the streets of Turkey.
