The United States has denied allegations of being behind the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh. The country’s National Security Advisor Jack Sullivan has called such allegations unbelievable. He claimed that top Indian officials do not believe that the United States had any role behind the events in Bangladesh.
This was reported by Hindustan Times in a report on Friday (January 10).
For the past few months, news has been circulating in the Indian media blaming the role of the United States behind the fall of the Awami League government. Where it is claimed that the Biden administration intervened in the tense situation in Bangladesh. And this led to the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, a long-time ally of New Delhi in Dhaka.
Jack Sullivan, who is visiting India, said, “The allegation that the United States was behind the popular uprising and the fall of the government in Bangladesh is absurd. India also does not believe such allegations.”
Speaking to a select group of journalists in the Roosevelt Room of the White House on Friday morning, Sullivan highlighted the US-India relationship as a special achievement of the Biden administration. He said that trust between the two sides has improved and strategic investment in each other has increased.
The US State Department (Foreign Office) and the Deep State (parallel state), a group of investigative journalists and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi are trying to destabilize India. Such allegations were made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in early December.
The accusations against India for the murder of pro-Khalistan Sikh leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun living in the United States, the allegations against industrialist Gautam Adani, and the change of power in Bangladesh were brought forward as the events behind these.
Sullivan responded by saying, “I respectfully reject the idea that the United States is leading the Deep State. The accusation that the United States was behind the overthrow of the government in Bangladesh is also absurd. I have spoken to high-level Indian officials and I understand that they do not believe such allegations.
However, he admitted this and said, “An Indian official has been accused of conspiring to kill an American citizen. It is not difficult to admit that after such allegations were raised, the US-India relationship has relaxed somewhat.”
New Delhi is concerned that US investment and cooperation efforts in India may be hampered after the Donald Trump administration came to power. However, Sullivan believes that Make in India and Made in America are complementary to each other.
Sullivan said, “The strategic investments that the US and India have made have changed. I believe that even if the Donald Trump administration comes to power in the future, the cooperation between the two countries on defense will continue.”
