Kamala or Trump, who does China prefer

Chinese President Xi Jinping has not yet publicly endorsed anyone in the US election. Whoever is elected in the next election, Democrat candidate Kamala Harris or Republican Donald Trump, both seem to maintain a tough stance on China.

The trade war against China began in 2018 and the US imposed tariffs on $250 billion in Chinese imports. In response, China imposed tariffs on $110 billion in US imports. As a result, if Trump is re-elected, it is unlikely that he will back down from this tough stance.

On the other hand, Democrats will stand against China’s growing rise around the world. When Joe Biden was elected president, he maintained the tariffs imposed by Trump. Furthermore, on September 13 of this year, the Biden administration announced an increase in tariffs on certain products made in China. If Kamala Harris wins, it is believed that the Biden administration’s policy towards China will continue.

As a result, whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump is elected, there is little chance of any comforting news about China. Despite the trade war, Trump has maintained a good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Trump survived an assassination attempt on July 14. He later said that world leaders had spoken to him. He said at a rally, “I spoke to President Xi. He is a very nice man. He wrote me nice things after I heard that I was infected.” But behind the scenes, Chinese officials may be leaning slightly towards Kamala Harris. Jia Qingguo, former dean of Peking University’s School of International Studies, said that just as Iran desperately wants Kamala Harris, Xi Jinping probably wants Kamala too.
