The ongoing civil war in Myanmar has caused a rift within the country’s ruling authoritarian army. Many within the army are leaking strategic information to the rebels. The junta government is being weakened by spies working undercover in the army, according to an investigation by the British media outlet BBC.

It is said that although these spies are loyal to the military from the outside, they are working for the rebels from the inside, whose symbolic color is red. The thing is that it is green on the outside, but bright red on the inside. Many members of the Myanmar military have been known as ‘watermelons’.

The country has been fighting pro-democracy rebels with the junta for several years. In the past 12 months, the army has lost control of several important areas. Less than a quarter of Myanmar is currently under their full control. According to UN data, the junta is still ‘very dangerous’ for people.

A major in central Myanmar, who goes by the pseudonym Kyaw, said the military’s brutality had forced him to work for the rebels. “I saw the bodies of the tortured civilians,” he said. “I couldn’t hold back my tears. We swore to protect the civilians, but now we are killing them.”

The information provided by the spies is helping the rebels launch successful attacks against the military.

The rebel leader, Win Aung, has said the spies will be honoured in the future. “When this revolution is over, we will honour them and help them build a life of their own choosing,” he said.

The Myanmar military declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.
