The Joe Biden administration has informally notified the US Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel. The new shipment includes artillery shells and air-to-air missiles to counter threats like drones, according to a Reuters report.

A US official told Axios on Friday (January 3) that the president has made it clear that Israel has the right to defend its citizens in accordance with international law and international human rights law. It also has the right to repel aggression by Iran and its proxies.

The package also includes small bombs and warheads, Axios said.

The new deal will need approval from the US House of Representatives and Senate committees to pass. However, the US State Department has not yet commented on the matter.
