The US, India maintain regular contact at the highest level on human rights and democracy issues.

After US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken released a report on human rights, Robert Gilchrist, the top official of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, made these comments while talking to reporters.

We call on India to uphold its human rights obligations and commitments, Gilchrist said. In addition, we regularly meet with representatives of civil society in both the United States and India to hear their views and opinions and inform the Commission on Human Rights. We encourage the Government of India to regularly consult and meet with civil society and organizations representing the people.

Incidentally, the US Department of State’s annual human rights assessment released last Monday noted that there had been massive violations of human rights in the Indian state of Manipur last year. Apart from this, attacks on minorities, journalists and dissidents are also claimed to have taken place in other parts of the country.
