What Erdogan said about relations with Syria

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said there is no reason for his country not to develop new relations with neighboring Syria.

The Turkish president told reporters after Friday prayers in Istanbul that there is no reason not to establish relations with Syria.

At the time, he emphasized that Ankara has no plans or aims to interfere in Syria’s internal affairs.

Erdogan said, “We will work together again in the same way that we once built relations between Turkey and Syria.”

Turkish-Syrian relations deteriorated in 1998, when Turkey accused Syria of supporting the terrorist group PKK. The terrorist group has waged decades of terror operations against Turkey, killing several thousand people.

Tensions between the two neighbors escalated in 2011 due to the outbreak of civil war in Syria and the subsequent influx of more than 4 million migrants.
