At least 24 people have been killed after a section of highway collapsed in China’s southern Guangdong province. Another 30 people were injured.

A 17.9-meter (58.7 ft) section of the highway between Guangdong’s Meizhou city and Dabu County collapsed after days of rain.

State media initially reported 19 deaths. But local authorities later said 24 people had been killed.

According to the BBC, 20 cars were trapped in the collapsed section of the highway. Later, the rescuers rescued the people trapped in the car and took them to the hospital.

30 injured people are being treated at the hospital. According to media reports, their condition is not serious.

Pictures in the media showed the wrecked vehicles lying in a deep pit. Rescuers are trying to recover the cars lying there.

The local administration closed the highway after the accident. Last month, Guangdong province also experienced flooding due to heavy rains. Millions of people were evacuated at that time.
