Kuwait’s parliament suspended, research on democracy will continue

Parliament has been dissolved in the Middle Eastern country of Kuwait. The country’s Emir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah made the announcement in a televised speech on Friday (May 10). At the same time, he suspended some articles of the constitution. Reuters news.

Along with the suspension of parliament, he announced the suspension of some constitutional articles for more than four years. He said that various aspects of the democratic process will be researched during this period.

At that time, the power of the National Assembly will be taken by the emir and the country’s cabinet, according to the country’s state TV.

Emir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah said, “Kuwait has recently gone through very difficult times … which leaves no room for hesitation or delay in taking difficult decisions to save the country and secure the country’s highest interests.”

The Kuwaiti legislature is more influential than the legislatures or similar bodies of other Gulf monarchies. The country has experienced cabinet reshuffles and the dissolution of parliament in the past due to decades of political deadlock.
