The situation created after the fall of ousted President Bashar al-Assad has opened a new chapter across the country. Various discussions are underway in the international arena about the reconstruction and future of the country. The United States has already contacted the Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The country’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this on Saturday (December 14).
Antony Blinken told reporters after joining a dialogue on Syria in Jordan with Middle Eastern, Turkish and Western diplomats.
Blinken said, “We have contacted HTS and other groups.” However, he did not specify how direct contact was made with them.
Blinken’s announcement of contacts with the power grabbers in Syria came at a time when Turkey opened an embassy in Damascus after almost 12 years.
Turkey has played an important role in Syria’s internal conflict. The country has considerable influence in northwest Syria and finances armed groups there, as well as maintaining effective relations with HTS, the rebel group that led the campaign to overthrow Bashar al-Assad.
