Increased Surveillance Heightens Tensions on Korean Peninsula

In a recent escalation of tension, North Korea has accused the United States and South Korea of significantly increasing their reconnaissance activities around the inter-Korean border. According to a statement released by state media KCNA on Sunday, North Korea’s Vice Defence Minister Kim Gang Il reported that between May 13 and 24, the U.S. flew at least 16 strategic reconnaissance planes, including RC-135, U-2S aircraft, and RQ-4B drones, over the Korean peninsula.

Kim asserted that these surveillance flights, alongside heightened patrol activities by South Korea’s navy and coast guard, are contributing to rising military tensions and repeatedly breaching the maritime border. He also condemned the ongoing practice of sending propaganda leaflets via balloons from South Korea, describing it as a “dangerous provocation.”

These balloons, sent by North Korean defectors and activists, often contain anti-regime leaflets, food, medicine, money, mini radios, and USB sticks with South Korean media content, aiming to reach North Korean citizens.

Kim expressed grave concerns over the continuous aerial reconnaissance, likening it to wartime activities. He stated that these actions violate North Korea’s national sovereignty and security, warning that any infringement will be met with immediate response.

“The U.S. and South Korean puppet air forces are continuously mobilising various aircraft with little or no time gap throughout the day, conducting aerial reconnaissance activities at a level comparable to wartime situations,” Kim said. He emphasized that North Korea will not tolerate these provocations and will act decisively to protect its sovereignty and security interests.

This development marks another chapter in the ongoing saga of hostilities on the Korean Peninsula, underscoring the fragile nature of the region’s security dynamics and the potential for rapid escalation. As the international community watches closely, the actions of all parties involved will be crucial in determining the next steps towards either resolution or further conflict.
