French President Emmanuel Macron was seen ignoring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while shaking hands with world leaders. The incident took place at the Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit held in the country’s capital Paris on Tuesday.
Video footage showed Modi extending his hand to Macron for a handshake. However, Macron did not extend his hand to Modi while shaking hands with other participants present there.
French President Macron was seen exchanging joy and greetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, among other leaders, according to Anadolu news agency.
The incident of not shaking hands with Modi despite extending his hand has caused a backlash on social media, with some interpreting it as a diplomatic disrespect. Others believe it may have been unintentional.
However, neither the French nor Indian governments have commented on the matter.
The two-day International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Paris, France, was attended by heads of state, top government officials, CEOs of various organizations and scientists from about 100 countries. Among the participants was US Vice President J.D. Vance. This is his first foreign visit after taking office.
The International Charter on Artificial Intelligence (AI), announced at the conference held in Paris, France, has been signed by 60 countries including France, China and India. However, the United States and the United Kingdom have not signed it. The agreement is aimed at making AI safe around the world.
